چکیده

Despite decades of study, the question What is the ground state of dense baryonic matter? remains in the realm of theoretical speculation. Advances in our understanding of strongly interacting many-particle systems and QCD suggests numerous candidate states which have competitive free energy. Conventional many-body techniques, including those of lattice gauge theory and non-relativistic variational and Greens function methods, have yet to make definitive statements regarding the phase structure of matter at densities of relevance to neutron stars. In these lectures we discuss a few novel phases of matter and highlight some of their astrophysical consequences. They include (i) baryonic matter with hyperons, (ii) kaon condensation and (iii) normal and superconducting quark matter. The choice of topics presented is a synthesis of collaborative research the author has undertaken in the past four years. In this sense, the scope of the article is limited and no attempt is made to present a comprehensive review. For a detailed review of assorted topics relating to the interior of neutron stars see Ref. [1].

The transition density and current provide valuable insight into the nature of nuclear vibrations. Nuclear vorticity is a quantity related to the transverse transition current. In this work, we study the evolution of the strength distribution, related to density fluctuations, and the vorticity strength distribution, as the neutron drip line is approached. Our results on the isoscalar, natural-p...

What is the ground state of ordinary hadronic matter if it is compressed to baryon densities several times larger than nuclear matter saturation density? This theoretical question, which has important applications to the physics of neutron stars, has led to the discovery of several novel and unusual phases of QCD. At zero baryon density chiral symmetry is broken by a condensate of quark-anti-qu...

We investigate the nuclear collective excitations of Wigner-Seitz cells containing nuclear clusters immersed in a gas of neutrons. This baryonic non-uniform system is specific to the structure of inner crust matter of neutron stars. The collective excitations are studied in the framework of a spherical HartreeFock-Bogoliubov + Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation, formulated in coordinate r...
